" The ornamental fish industry in Sri Lanka has become a valuable foreign exchange earner during the past few years. Sri Lankan ornamental fish exports for the international market include locally wild caught marine, brackish-water and freshwater species as well as captive bred freshwater fish. Sri NAQDA  is  involved  in  development  of  new  ornamental fish  strains,  development  of  technology, provide brood fish, fish disease diagnosis, provide  training and  technical  assistance etc. to support development of ornamental fish and aquatic plant culture and exports. Presently, there are about 36 registered aquarium fish exporters and together they currently contribute approximately 1% of the world's demand for ornamental fish .

To ensure the fish are in good health, a certificate issued by the Department of Animal Quarantine on health accompanies each and every shipment. "
